Homem de Palavra
"Man of A Word" was José Joaquim de Sena Freitas (1840-1913), eminent writer and polemist, presented by Camilo Castelo Branco as "an excellent writer, an illustrated priest, a man of good, a convinced and largely irrefutable argumentant". This Church man and intellectual in the city claimed to be a speaker, journalist, translator of religious opuscules, polemist, author of travel chronicles, editor of sermons and speeches. He did all this and also intervened in social action, as shown by his commitment to the foundation of Conferences of St. Vincent de Paul in various locations and in the mobilization of Catholics for participation in political life.

In this compact volume, interpretative studies prepared by researchers who discussed them in open seminars and the minutes of the International Congress "Church, Society and Culture – Father Sena Freitas and his Time" are underway in October 2005 at the Portuguese Catholic University - Lisbon. The attentive study of Sena Freitas' work joins a stimulating reading of the cultural and religious coordinates of the time he lived and militated, thus paving the way for new interpretations.

In addition to honoring a figure of excellence, Man of Palavra intends to contribute to the construction of knowledge about portuguese culture of the late nineteenth century and beginnings of the twentieth century.
